I remember drinking many, many cups of coffee whilst attending university, both between classes, and at home while studying well into the night. That warm cup of coffee was a friend, while the rest of the household was in blissful slumber and I had yet another assignment to complete. I learned to love and appreciate coffee.
That was in the days before personal computers. The university computer was large, expensive, magical, and off-limits. It would whir, make noises and generate many pages of useless printouts on lined paper.
The advent of the personal computer brought with it the computer nerd — a sometimes anti-social being who would live on coffee (and little else) and spend all their time typing away at the keyboard. Writing programs, playing games, experimenting, learning, loving coffee. Sometimes writing viruses, just because they could. In many ways it was a new frontier to be conquered, just like the Wild West.
Many years later, the computer has become a household tool and entertainment centre. A necessity, really. Students require them for their studies, with many schools having a notebook (laptop) program where everyone has their own. I bet students still spend many hours studying and doing assignments while enjoying a delicious cup of warming, stimulating, coffee. In many ways, coffee and computers have become almost synonymous. It’s all about loving coffee!
